The global pandemic has brought out a new wave of scams, with scammers impersonating major companies.
The Federal Trade Commission has received more than 365,600 fraud reports related to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total loss of $564.6 million, since January 2020. Most of those fraud reports are connected to online shopping.
The scam typically comes as a text message claiming a well-known company wants to help people due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Better Business Bureau said in a statement. The offers range from discounted services to gift cards and cash by clicking a link or replying to the message.
One message said, “Due to the pandemic, Hulu is giving everyone a free 1-year subscription to help you stay at home. Get yours here [link].”
