In recent months, news about Rich Communication Services (RCS) has made a big splash in the mobile technology press. First, Google announced that the company would use it as the basis for Chat, the Android messaging platform. Next, Samsung announced that it will work with Google to ensure that their messaging apps “communicate seamlessly with each other while benefitting from RCS.”
Although RCS technology has been around for a while, Google and Samsung’s buy-in make it something to watch right now. If their vision becomes a reality, RCS-enabled platforms could be the new texting “killer app” that puts carrier-based short message service (SMS) and multimedia messaging service (MMS), and app-based messaging like WhatsApp, in the rear-view mirror.
I first learned about this technology when EZ Texting, where I work, became part of Google’s Early Access Program for RCS for telecom carriers.
