Educators, financial managers, social enterprise entrepreneurs, designers, salespeople, film makers, social justice activists, marketers, supply chain managers, labor auditors — the apparel and textile industries are made up of people from every walk of life pursuing many different careers.
They encompass a host of trades and skills and competences, some old and some new. Many of those that were at one time truly trades, in the old hand-tool-and-apprenticeship meaning of the word, have become automated and industrialized beyond recognition.
Certainly a handful of ateliers remains in pockets of old world Europe; but these are staffed by either very old craftspeople or an elite class of younger artisans working within the very small world that is haute couture.
